USS BUSH (DD 529)

"Cousins"

Back to Photos List

Chief Torpedoman's Mate (CTM) Ray Mayhugh (left) poses with his cousin, Seaman 1st Class Ed Bennett (right) on a BUSH smoke screen generator. The CTM had helped get his cousin transferred to the BUSH from the cruiser NASHVILLE. After the BUSH was sunk, the CTM recalled:

"As I was swimming toward one of the floater nets I saw Ed swimming toward the same net. So we joined forces and stayed together until after we were picked up....Both Ed and I were wearing life belts which had small canisters which inflated the belts the first time. During the night we took turns blowing each others belts up. I remember thinking if anything happened to Ed, Grandma would give me hell."
